Austria didn’t just meet its goal — it walked far beyond it. The country’s first nationwide steps challenge has turned into a public sensation, transforming a simple idea into a powerful statement about health, community, and sustainable mobility.

A Small Goal, a Giant Leap: Nearly 700 Million Steps

What began as a modest target of 100 million steps quickly grew into something much bigger. According to the organizers of Österreich zu Fuß, participants collected almost 700 million steps, the equivalent of 14 trips around the Earth.

The challenge was launched to mark Austria’s national Day of Walking, introduced in 2025 to promote everyday movement and active mobility.

A Movement That Surprised Even Its Supporters

Mobility Minister Peter Hanke praised the overwhelming participation, noting that the initiative gained remarkable momentum thanks to the collaboration of all Austrian transport associations and the ÖBB.

“The challenge developed an impressive dynamic,” Hanke said, emphasizing that the results show how deeply walking is embedded in everyday life in Austria.

For the ministry, the message is clear: walking is not just a way to get from A to B — it’s a contribution to health, quality of life, and sustainable mobility.

From Austria to the World: Walking Goes International

The success didn’t stop at the country’s borders. On April 27, 2026, the initiative expanded globally with the first International Walking Day. People from 67 countries joined a worldwide steps challenge, collecting an astonishing 4.8 billion steps — roughly 96 times around the Earth.

This global response underscores a growing international awareness of walking as a simple, accessible, and climate-friendly form of mobility.

Strengthening Active Mobility for the Future

For the Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure, the numbers are more than symbolic. They validate Austria’s strategy of promoting walking as a key pillar of sustainable transport — especially in combination with public transit.

The initiative is set to grow further, with new programs and campaigns planned to keep walking at the heart of Austria’s mobility transition.

Next Milestone: Cycling and Walking Summit in Eisenstadt

The next major event is already on the horizon. From September 9 to 11, Eisenstadt will host the Cycling and Walking Summit, bringing together hundreds of experts from politics, science, administration, and business.

Their goal: to develop fresh ideas and strategies for active mobility and sustainable transport concepts.

A Step Forward — Together

Austria’s first steps challenge has shown what’s possible when a country moves together. What started as a national campaign has grown into a global movement — one that proves that every step counts, for health, for community, and for the planet.
